I grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia and started learning bluegrass banjo and singing as a kid in Greenville, NC in the mid-1970s. Early influences playing on the 8-track in my parents' home were Flatt & Scruggs, the Seldom Scene, Country Gentlemen, and the Carter Family. Things really got good later in life when I discovered the Stanley Brothers and Jimmy Martin, along with Delta blues singers like Son House, Big Joe Williams, Blind Willie Johnson. I married a Canadian girl, who took me to Vancouver, British Columbia and finally to Calgary, Alberta where I live now. I play in a bluegrass band called Widow Maker, though that's quieted down since a couple of the band members moved too far away to get together easily. I still perform solo here and there around southern Alberta, but it's more of a singer-songwriter thing than bluegrass. I play Scruggs-style banjo, flatpick a Collings guitar, and play slide Delta blues on a 1932 National Style O steel guitar. Most recently I started learning clawhammer banjo from Dwight Diller, and I've got a custom CloverLick banjo on order from Jeff Kramer in Wisconsin...
