I have recently "re-discovered! my 5 string banjo after spending many years with other instruments. It is, of course, in need of some restoration, but I keep being given different advice from different people. The problem is that I have always used light unwound metal strings, but am told that these are unsuitable and I should be using nylon or gut. Also the machine heads are the old friction type and I am told to replace them with more modern screw type ones. I feel this will de-value the instrument to change the original heads. Would appreciate any advice on these two questions.
