I took lessons from Mark Barnett around 1965 in Peru, Indiana. My first stage appearance was a set up job by my older brother Joe. He took me and my banjo to the Miami County fairgrounds for the weekly country music show and talked a guy into putting me on for one song, Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In the 70's, I gave lessons at Crane's Music House in Seymour, IN and was pleased to help Dennis Marcum get started. He became one of the best players I ever heard. He took lessons from Roger Smith in Columbus, IN who played for Bill Monroe for a while. Dennis was in the group, New Shades of Bluegrass, and they invited me to play bass on their album in 1978. I think I have the only copies left, about 10. I've never been very good at 3 finger picking so I've migrated to clawhammer. It suits my slower style.
