I had played the guitar when I was much younger, mostly bluesy stuff, with a flat pick. Since I began playing the banjo a few years ago I hardly touched a guitar. I enjoyed the rhythmic swing of clawhammer and the syncopation of old time finger picking. Recently, while working through some other strumming styles as taught by Mike Seeger in his Southern Banjo Sounds series, I realized the similarites in picking of some banjo styles I was becoming familiar with, and how those same styles translate to guitar. I started picking up guitar again and found it really enjoyable. In fact, the work I had done playing the banjo lead me to be able to do things I had not been able to do previously I had never been much of a fingerpicker on the guitar, but after spending so much time with banjo I found that I was able to start picking up thigs on guitar that I had always struggled with before, like Piedmont blues, Carter Picking etc. The concentration of rhythms in banjo picking also helps with a lot of these old guitar styles, maybe because many of those old country pickers started out playing banjo too....everything old is new again
