Just to share my own experience in the hope that it may benefit others. I am a left hander, and took up (classical) guitar in my early teens. I persevered playing right handed because the book I initially learnt from advised 'a word to left handed players - they don't make left handed pianos, so you shouldn't play guitar left handed either'. In my late thirties, I discovered bluegrass, and struggled with the 5 string banjo for a while until I had to concede that I was playing it the wrong way round. Now, after around ten years of playing left handed, I am beginning to see some real results, but it has been a difficult journey, to put it mildly. I know that there are many fine pickers who are left handed but play right handed, and I know that the choice of instruments is very restricted for lefty's, but my advice to beginners would have to be play the way you are most comfortable playing, from the outset. It could save you many years of wondering 'what if I'd started out playing the other way round'.
