I'm hoping to get feedback from some of the experienced players on this site.
I perform guitar and mandolin in professional and civic settings (from duos to ensembles). I was recently asked to perform banjo with a prestigious 29-year old concert band. Although I have a 5-string banjo, the part for the concert band work calls for a 6-string since the notes go LOWER that D4 (such as C and G below the treble staff) and the chord voicings would work much better with a 6-string.
I'd like to purchase a 6-string banjo, which would be for semi-professional use, but based on this gig I don't think the instrument would be used often. However, I can also share it with my high school students- you never know if can also be used in a musical pit orchestra. Importantly., I'm looking for a sound that can be projected well in a concert band setting (winds/percussion) yet still have a somewhat "warm" tone so it blends well.
My price range is up to $450, but would be willing to go a bit higher if there is a model that really makes a difference. Since time would be an issue, I'm not looking for anything that would require frequent set up or maintenance. PLEASE suggest some strings as well!!!!!
I'd really appreciate candid feedback.
