Hi from London, England
Thanks to everone who gave me advice I now have a functioning open backed banjo, which still needs a bit of tweaking but which I am very happy with.
Not too sure how to post a picture, and I often find I can't open some of the pictures which appear on the banjo hangout pages.
I have decided to build a resonator banjo. I have sourced maple for the neck, tuners, a head, headstock veneer, fretboard, trussrod ,hooks and nutsand notched stretcherband. , a one piece flange and some resonator fixing screws.
I successfully built a wooden pot and attached a basic brass tone ring to my open back build.
My ignorance is total when it comes to knowing how the resonator gets attached to the pot of a resonator banjo. I made brass shoes for my open back build, but I don't know if that is what is done for a resonator banjo. Also I don't know what shape the pot should be i.e do I make a lip of some kind for the flange to sit on ?
Also, I was looking for a tone ring and saw a vintage flat top (Tyler Mountain )tone ring on ebay. What I don't know is what I am supposed to do with the top of the pot to make it fit.Haven't yet got the £90 together to buy ithe tone ring.
I don't have anything like a lathe, and managed to fit the simple brass tonering on my openback using a saw and a dremel and a few prayers.
My skills are basic ,but I am enthusiastic about this project.
Any advice on any of the above, however basic will be absorbed and put to good use. The simpler the information , the easier I will be able to act on it.
This is a wonderful site and Iam in awe of the knowledge and skills, which you folks so generously share with one another.
Best Wishes,
Hugh
