Hi. I am not a musician, not even a hobby musician. But I like music. Good music of any kind. First of all country music (how about Poncho an Lefty or Highwayman?), and of course bluegrass and oldtime. But there is also baroque (Bach, Händel, Vivaldi etc.) and rock and folk. I am singing and whistling almost the whole day long, but – I can't play the banjo!! I started a long time ago (now I am 57 years old) to practice the picking style and clawhammer. I did hardly any progress. I even composed two little tunes for clawhammer. Why? It is easier to create chords you manage than to try those a wise guy with swift fingers tries to teach you. Now here's my problem: It does not lie in the chords or melody. I even know some theory about notes. My problem are the rolls! The automatism of the finger motion that is necessary for doing the continuity of the rolls. I am a physician and I know our physical performance largely depends on automatic actions, groups of motions that is, where not every singe action has to be ordered by the brain. You could never write on the typewriter this way (as I am doing it now) with aceptable speed. Involuntariness is the word. Now, before I bore you to death: can anybody tell me how I can make progress is practicing rolls? Is it just the practice – hours, days, moths, years? Or is there some trick, some knowledge that helps the afford and promotes the success? I appreciate any help – even if it will not make me a Sonny Osborne or Raymond Fairchild. Harry
