I was given a Stella 4 string banjo by my brother, who never played it (or any other stringed instrument). It was very difficult to tune and would not stay in tune. I installed a set of planetary tuners, and now it is easy to tune and will stay that way for quite a while.
The banjo has the decal on the headstock with the two theatrical masks and a heavy wooden resonator which is removable.
Questions
Is there any way to determine the age of the instrument?
Can it be played with or without the resonator and if so what's the difference?
Does it make a difference if the resonator is tight or loose?
