Old Newbie with questions

Monday, October 29, 2012

I am a 70 year old banjo newbie, but I have played the guitar for many years. I started in June of this year with 6 private lessons and have since completed Dan Levenson's book CLAWHKAMMER BANJO FROM SCRATCH which I found to be excellent. I cannow play the now play the following tunes slowly: Old Joe Clark (Ryan Spearman arrangement) Cripple Creek (Spearman) Spotted Pony (Levenson arrangement) Arkansas Traveler (Levenson) Year of Jubilo (Levenson) Buffalo Gals (Levenson) I have been reading BHO religiously and find it to be great. I have 2 questions: 1. How many beats per minute would be considered "up to speed" for each of those tunes? 2. I can play songs by ear much easier in open G tuning than in double D (open C capo two). Why is that? Should I simply stay with open G for ear playing and use other tunings for tunes which have been tabbed out or which I learn from others. Thanks for your advice. Bill
