Well, I have learned to play via tabs, and am fairly decent at it. Have been playing in occasional jams, but most of them go way too fast for me, and I don't know the songs. So, I try to just watch the guitar players to see what chords they're playing (I play guitar also), and then try to pick it up from there. Still a bit hard to stay with, if I don't know the tune, the first time through the song! So now I am trying to just pick out the melody and incorporate it into forward rolls. Very slow progress on this venture though. Any tips?

Have played guitar since I was 16 (a long time!). in 2007, had dinner at a restaurant that had a bluegrass jam playing in another room. The music was awesome, and the jam had a huge crowd. Came back another time and watched it up close. I totally fell in love with the banjo and was very impressed with the banjo tunes and the banjo player. Bought a cheap used banjo from a music store, a Mel Bay "Teach Yourself Banjo" book, and figured out how to play a dozen songs. Wasn't learning it fast enough, so I started taking banjo lessons in February of 2007, and have learned a whole lot more, as well as much better techniques. For my birthday in 2008, my husband bought me a new Deering Goodtime banjo -- which I totally love, and it's sized better to fit me and my arm length. :) Have jammed with the big boys in Lyons, Colorado, once, (my first jam) and it scared the heck outta me. Lots of people, and very fast & furious, although easy to blend into the background since I'm still pretty new at it. Now I jam when I can in Longmont and in Boulder and Longmont, Colorado, with smaller groups, which is much more comfortable and not so intimidating. I'm excited that I'm starting to be able to actually keep up with the music most the time! :) Am also learning how to incorporate the melody lines into the rolls. Have a long way to go on that one! Am going to try a couple other jams too, to find one that fits me well, with players more at my level. Am working all the time, so not as much time to practice as I'd like -- but I try to squeeze it in every chance I get. Can't wait til I get better and my fingers get faster!
