I have a flat head Morgan Monroe 5-string which has been modified with a Huber engineered rim and ring. I typically use a standard light string set (10/11/12/20/10). I record myself (with a good large diaphragm mic) and from the recordings I feel the 5th string sticks out a little more than I'd like. I listen to the Grand Ol' Opry You Tubes and it seems like the banjos, particularly Earl's, emphasize a nice fat midrange frequency, and the 5th string is more like an unobtrusive adornment to enhance the sound. First off, are those old recordings reasonably accurate or not? Secondly, I think my 5th string is just too loud; what are some ways to diminish it? Thanks!
