In 1963, when I was just starting to play guitar, I took lessons from Stu Ramsay in his home on the north end of Elmhurst. I was singing and playing in a local folk group at York High School. I spent that whole summer working as a busboy at Catunoes (sp) restaurant in Hillside so I could buy my first quality guitar. Stu had a Martin D-28. I earned @ $300 that summer; and for $ 295 I was able to buy a Martin D-18, including a hard shell case.
The guitar came with standard tuning pegs, but I really liked the look of Grover pegs so I bought a set of 'gold' Grovers and installed them myself. After I finished, I realized I had put them on backwards, so they tuned the opposite direction.
I finally sold my guitar on EBay in 2003 for $2600. Wow. So if you run into a man in California with backwards gold Grovers you can tell him I say hello.
