First fascinated by sound of 5-string banjo at age 13 during days of "Hootenanny" TV show. Learned from Pete Seeger book, played both Scruggs style and frailing. With no local bluegrass bands got tired of forward rolls and thereafter played clawhammer for next few decades. Taught self minstrel stroke-style in 1990's, since then have played local gigs both solo and with our band the Tuckahoe Travelers. Also flirted with classical fingerstyle for a few years in the early 2000's. Started playing occasional "Bluegrass Mass" services at my wife's church 3 yrs ago, noticed that fingerpicking seemed to complement mandolin and guitar the best. Then I heard Noam Pikelny play and realized bluegrass style fingerpicking had come a LONG ways since the early 1960's! Current goals are to get solid again on Scruggs style, venture into Keith and single-string styles. Since in church music we are not encouraged to take solos, I'm looking for people to jam with in the Winchester, Va. area. Fifty-odd years later, I am still fascinated by the exotic sound of the 5-string banjo, America's greatest stringed instrument!
