This coming week I will have my first banjo lesson. I fell in love with bluegrass music while teaching Appalachian Style High Kicking Clogging in 1978. Playing the banjo is something I have wanted to do since childhood and never did. My brother is very talented at guitar and encouraged me to do it now that the kids are grown and I finally have the time but for years I thought I was too old to learn. Finally I decided old dogs could learn too, and I am very excited. I know totally and absolutely nothing about music. My brother used to call me in to sing stuff for him when he was learning new songs because he said I had perfect pitch but I think he only meant I can listen real good. Well, I may have zip for talent but at least I already know how to grin! I've played around with some of the finger rolls and positioning. I have tiny hands though and my pinky finger is only 2" if I stretch it. So if I plant only my pinky, in order to get my other fingers to lift above the strings I have to bend them kinda weird, like a claw. After reading about the "pinky problems" here, I am beginning to wonder if it will be a problem for me. As far as whether or not to plant both pinky and ring fingers, well, my thought is whatever will allow you to be your best whether it requires training or not. If it really doesn't matter to the final outcome then it's nuts to try to do something just because somebody else does it that way. I feel sure most anyone's hands are larger than mine so I will simply learn to adapt. Is there any such thing as a pinky extension?
