Since banjo camp, I've been working a little bit on clawhammer-style playing: You may remember that I won that nice Deering Vega Old-Tyme Wonder banjo a few years ago here on the Hangout and didn't even play Old-Tyme (!) on it. So in the interest of doing justice to the banjo prize gods, I spent more than half of the time at the Midwest Banjo Camp in the novice Clawhammer group. It was a fun group, but I came away realizing that just getting the basic stroke down was going to take some work.
So I've just uploaded the first humble fruits of my labor: Bile dem Cabbage Down, clawhammer style. Terri McMurray, who instructed us at the camp, worked with us on this. Of course, at the camp, I could still barely hit the right melody note strings. Heck, I left the camp feeling happy to have gotten the brush-thumb stroke almost worked out. Now I feel as if it's coming along, and that, if I keep at it, I'll be able to go back to the MWBC next year much farther along.
I have to say, I'm really enjoying the clawhammer style and the way the music sounds coming off this nice little banjo.
