I have an old Alvarez Montana Five Star (4286) that I beleive was built in the late 60s or early 70s. I bought it in 1982 in a music shop in Lubbock Texas.

I’m a Software Engineer for a large I.T. consulting firm. I started playing the banjo in 1979. By 1990, I was practicing a consistent 2 hours every day and my wife, Rottweiler and I attended all the Bluegrass festivals we could find in and around the Houston area. I had the pleasure of studying banjo with an instructor in Houston named Tony Ullrich. I never got to meet Earl but we met Bill Monroe one evening at a venue called Rutherford’s in Houston. We met Dr. Ralph Stanley at a Jr. College in Odessa, Texas and met and spoke at length with Alan Munde at a Steak and Ale in Houston (We’re originally from West Texas.) They had the greatest shows at that Steak and Ale. Perhaps they still do. I haven’t been back to Houston in years. Some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. Well, I got busy with work when we moved back to Midland, Texas and the festivals required lots of driving. Eventually I stopped consistent practice and my banjo skills slowly started to atrophy. Now I'm playing 30 or 40 minutes every evening and it's starting to sound better. KD
