New Banjo Advice (~$1200-1750)

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

I'm looking for an upgrade from my Washburn B-11 to something more professional. I'm playing in a not-quite-bluegrass band (we have drums) and I'm frustrated with the muddled sound of my beginner banjo. I'll be putting a pickup in the new banjo and I've been thinking of spending around $1200-1750. The used market is pretty scarce at my price range and I don't really want to spend that much on eBay.

I was initially committed to Deering, probably a Sierra unless I could find something nicer used. But after reading some past posts on this site I'm now considering a Gold Tone OB-250 or maybe a Recording King RK-80. With so much information out there, it's hard to decide what the best banjo for me would be. It's a pretty large commitment for me financially so I thought I'd get some input from the pros!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
