Banjothon - Head tension report

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

To the young man who checked the head tension on my banjo at Banjothon.

When I got home I rechecked the tension with my drum dial and my dial read about 1.25 pounds lower than the readings that you got with your dial. (And yes I made sure to zero it out on the glass first)

You were very correct in your statement that the dials do have some variance.

Really enjoyed your picking and even old guys like me can learn something, thanks.

Hi, My name is Jack and I suffer from BAS. My Father and Grandfather and only Uncle were tenor players and I hated it. (Wish I knew 5'2, Alabama Jubilee, Darktownstrutter's Ball, and Nola now) . Played drums in rock bands until I was 19 and then went to an Earl Scruggs show, so this is what a banjo is supposed to do. Followed up by losing a fiance by buying a harmony banjo , getting lessons , and hanging out at the Sun Devil Lounge at the Holiday Inn in Tempe AZ for 6 nights out of 7 for six weeks listening to Dale Whitcomb of Red, White and Bluegrass. A truly religous experience. Decided I needed a better banjo so had a pilot friend fly me up to Boulder CO and bought the OME XXX that was on the cover of the catalog from Chuck Ogsbury. Eventually sold it to Joe Bethancourt who still raves about that banjo to this day. Scary flight back as the added weight of the banjo made getting over certain mountain ranges ( The Rockies !!!) difficult, but we did make it or I wouldn't have anything else to say. MORE TO FOLLOW
