In 1976 I was stationed in Anchiorage and took up taxidery. I shot and mounded several Spruce hens and Ptarmigan. When It came time to rotate back to the states I decided that i would take some picutres of all of my mounts and sell them. i did and a girl in my office had purchased a "Harmony" (PLASTIC) banjo for I believe $75.00. I had always enjoyed the sound of a banjo and I had recently acquired a brother in law who made and played banjos. (Randys Picken Parlor in Baron rouge) So i offered to exchange a mount for the instrument as she wanted a bird for her new husband.
My "Wonderful" brother in law was six hours from me when we came back from AK. He quickly drew out a tab sheet on paper and did give me a thum pick and finger picks for the first two fingers. No more instruction from him. he left Louisiana and became some one elses brother in law. i placed my banjo in the closet.
It has sat there ever since. I decided last year after getting some computer instrution on how to use the web to investigate a DVD to learn by. i had no idea what to buy but settled on Larry Watson out of Carolina. He has several songs and fairly good video to go by. But at times he talks to fast, fret three sting two and he uses the number system. all strings are numbered. Well i went to the books store and purchased a beginners banjo book with a gal on the front and three songs. Well i did learn how to read tab and i find that a bit easier than the number system.
So that is what i am doing now. I have larned the Boil them cabbage down. Well my version. I am tring to do cripple creek but have not got the notes set to memory. i have the "three two one five roll down and the one two five down.
But if anyone had any suggestions as to how or what i might need to do to without an instructor, please em mail me at JAdams@mdoc.state.ms.us.
