Been playing AT the banjo (on and off, mostly off) since I was 16. Back then, fellow banjo players and decent learning materials were hard to come by. I got good at reading tab, but never bothered to learn chords and scales (you know, the foundation of music). I was a mechanical banjo player. Well, fast forward to the internet age and excellent learning resources, and I am finally UNDERSTANDING the banjo instead of picking AT it. I guess I'm at the intermediate level now.
