Deering does right by a disappointed picker

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

In April of 2014 I posted a blog on BHO telling the story of my 2005 Deering deluxe and my disappointment in the blistering of the finish on the resonator. After talking with the Deering customer service rep. I was resigned to accept the fact that the company was not going to help me with this problem. Well I am writing to let all who will listen know that deering banjo company went out of their way to make this problem right. In October of 2015 I found out that a man named Barry Hunn who is Derring's world wide sales manager was touring the country, showing off their line of banjos and basically show casing the company. One of the stops was at Down home guitars a full service stringed instrument shop where I jam every thursday night. Down Home is located in Frankfort Illinois. I went there on the night of Mr. Hunn's presentation and I asked him to look at my banjo. I showed him a copy of the blog I posted on BHO and he asked me to wait until the night's business was finished and he said he would look into the problem. I waited and when he finished with all of the questions and comments of the audience, he asked me to let him study the blistering and scaling of the finish on my resonator. This man was extremely kind and concerned and asked many well thought out questions, all with the intention of figuring out what caused this problem. Finally ,he said he didn't know what caused the blistering to occur but even though I bought this banjo used from a private party, Deering wanted to make the people playing their instruments happy. He also stated that because I didn't buy it new ,he couldn't cover it as warranty work but he asked me if I would agree to pay the cost of shipping and insuring it and $130.00 and Deering would completely strip and refinish the resonator and pay the shipping and insurance back to me. It took about 6 weeks to complete and when I got it back it was just beautiful. Even the binding which was turning yellow , was a bright white and better than I could imagine. Mr. Barry Hunn could have dismissed me as just some old crack pot trying to get something for nothing but he didn't . He knew that when I told him that I waited a long time to get an American made banjo ,I was sincere. I will tell this story to anyone who will listen about the American banjo company who cares about the people who play their instruments. Thank you Mr. Hunn and thank you Deering banjo Company.

I have played guitar for over 40 years. Mostly Irish folk and country. Played with family band in the 70's and other Irish groups in the early sixty's. I retired in 2004 and started getting back into playing in jams( country) . While playing Irish music , we were always needing a banjo sound on certain songs ,so I started to teach myself just enough to get by. In late 2008 I decieded that I wanted to get serious with the bluegrass banjo. I found a teacher and started lessons . I had learned rolls on my own and I am able to play simple breaks in jams that I play in twice a week.I love to play traditional bluegrass and I am learning more and more.
