I started playing the banjo when I was about 5 years old. It was a mastertone that was too heavy for me to carry, so I drug it everywhere I went. I learned "Cripple Creek" and won a few local talent contests when I was about 7 and kind of lost interest in fingerpicking, and the banjo altogether until I was in my mid 20's when I decided to try to figure out how to clawhammer. It took me a lot of beating and strumming before I finally figured out exactly what to do, but once I got the hang of it, I took off pretty good. I used to play locally at little bluegrass "frolics" but everybody played bluegrass and all I knew was hillbilly music. Nobody knew the same songs that I did and I got burned out going to them. Now I just play for my own enjoyment at home and to aggravate the wife, kids and dogs.
