Clifford Essex Regal 5 String Banjo

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

This is my first post.

I have inherited a Clifford Essex Regal 5 String Banjo (serial number 389) complete with original case.

I am not quite sure what to do with it. It only had 3 metal strings on it when I got it.

I have cleaned the Banjo, oiled the fretboard and polished the frets, although to be fair it was a clean instrument to start with. I have also renovated the case

I am not a banjo player, but I do play Guitar and frequent regular “singarounds and a picks” and jam with people playing Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Dobro and Violin.

I was hoping to restring and replace the bridge. I would like some advice on type of strings i.e. Nylon type or metal type gauge etc.

I have realised that this banjo might be fairly rare as it was made between 1936 and 1942.

As a non-player (as yet) it’s possible that I could sell it; any advice on this would be gratefully received.

Regards

Colin
