I was jamming with some buddies today playing Doug's Tune by the Dillards. We noticed that they are playing in Bb on the Andy Griffith show and the album. Our bass player, an older guy with a lot lot of experience said that a lot of those bluegrass players play in Bb. Why Bb? Then there is the conundrum of the high G string. Fortunately my jo has spikes, so I de-tuned the high G by a half step and spiked it at the 9th fret. I've also noticed this watching Osborne Bros. videos. Do you all think the banjo sounds better in those keys? I'm not sure.
