Playing in key of D

I have been playing banjo for two years now but I still have trouble playing in the key of D. I know that you can capo the 5th string at the 7th fret and play in the open G, and capo at the second fret and play in the C position.

I have problems with what notes to hit, the rolls, and licks. For some reason D is the hardest chord to play for me.
