Key of D – aDADE
In this, tunetorial number 49, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Doctor Doctor.
Once a common jam session tune, this one isn’t played as often as it was. BUT it is a very cool and simple tune. You can play it just as sparse as you please or fancy it up a bit as Dan does here. There are even some words: "Doctor, Doctor, come here quick, I swallowed my tobacco and its makin' me sick."
Dan has recorded this tune several times over the years. One is on his Fine Dining CD with The Boiled Buzzards - David Rice played a KILLER version with his harmonica on that one. Dan also recorded it on his Barenaked Banjos CD so if you have those you can hear a couple of different versions. Also, Dan loves the version by The Hot Mud Family from their album Meat and Potatoes and Stuff Like That (which we hope they re-release someday), which might be one of the first versions of the tune Dan ever heard.
Feel free to post any questions you have on it, remark on sections you would like clarified or things you might like added. Yes even the things you don’t like are fair game. It grows the tune and the community when you know what you like and don’t like as you build your own style.
This version of Doctor Doctor is tabbed out in Dan's book Old Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo (MB 30224). It also appeared previously in his Buzzard Banjo Clawhammer Style (MB 099126) which is still in print.
