Ulf Jagfors - "Mr. Akonting" - has made enormous contributions to our understanding of the modern day banjo. He did this, of course, while living happily in Sweden, traveling to Africa with his friend and colleague Daniel Jatta. Along the way, from time-to-time, he'd stop in at banjo gatherings throughout the US and drop off another bomb shell or two of findings. :)
Ulf is curious, fun and passionate about the banjo. He's spent a good portion of his life pursuing this mysterious instrument. And at 71, he doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Warning: His enthusiasm is also highly contagious. What a delightful man. :)
