Hi folks. Better late than never. I've made up a checklist/survey for people who have an old-time Watauga County mountain banjo. Let me know what you think about it. We might learn some interesting things if we were to share our knowledge. You can see it and copy if you like on my banjer website.

You might want to add sections on: 1) the heel shape of the neck 2) the material used for the internal tension hoop on for the head 3) Head material if known 4) writing, signatures, dates on the under side of the head 5) other written material which came with the banjo. I have no idea where it is, but my Frank Proffitt came with a busnness card of some sort with a handwritten note on the back about the head being made with groundhog hide or something like that. Haven't seen it in 40+ years, but it might be around somewhere.
