Learning 2 finger/thumb lead

From Picking Dick on 6/7/2016 12:51:22 PM

I'm trying to learn 2 finger, and I have some questions.  What does one use as a scale for the melody frets?  Are only strings #2, 3, 4 used for the melody?  Does one ever fret melody notes on string #1?

i hope someone can help me from time to time.  I can't find any books, so I'm mostly using YouTube.  Thanks in advance.

I don't know about anybody else, but I use all the strings for melody notes. I can't see any reason not to.

How do you pick #1 string --index or thumb? Also, how far up the neck do normally pick your scales? Above #5 or 7? I've got the basic roll and pinches, etc. I'm just trying to figger out the melody notes.

Like Marc, I use all the strings including the chantarelle as necessary. I don't use the index finger at all, I use the third digit, the middle finger. Only on the 1st string, the thumb on all others. When I do an up strum I use the middle digit, but for some reason when I down strum I use all four fingers. As for melody - go up the neck as far as is necessary.

Only in rare circumstances does the thumb play the first string. Most people would probably say it never plays the first string, but I occasionally find myself using it there. I concur with the idea that one goes as high as necessary on the first string - That's where you'll find the highest notes. I never play scales, and I never read music, so I find notes wherever they're convenient by trial and error.

Thanks a lot, Marc and RJWMitchell. I'm hoping I can pick it up because Clawhammer is wearing away my fingernails.

You don't have to be stuck using your finger on the 1st string only. Learning to use it on other strings will make finding note runs easier and broaden the possibilities immensely. Start by doing your TITI roll with the 1st finger note on the 2nd string. Next, do it with the 1st finger note on the 1st string and the 2nd finger note on the 2nd string. You'll see that this is easy. Next, practice varying the finger notes to play on all four long strings. Now work these rolls into yor melody line.

You can chase the high notes way up the 2nd string, or you can switch ti index lead and play them on the 1st string. ITIT instead of TITI. Remember that you can leave out an I or a T any time you want to. No need to keep rolling, pinching, rolling, pinching!

I have been playing two-finger style for many years, but I just made my first recorded contribution to banjo hangout. Hope you enjoy

I am playing mostly with thumb lead here, but I play melody on the first string at times with my index finger. At other times I lead with my thumb and go up to the high notes on the second string and play a harmony note on the first string. Still another effect I use is to play a lead note with my thumb and "stutter" the melody note by playing it with my index on the next note

Thanks for the input bradbahler, and I enjoyed your music too. I hope all the info I've gotten so far will help me to move forward.
