Goodtime II Mods review on "Sound Off"

From Grumpy1 on 2/19/2011 6:04:05 PM

I've recently tried a couple of mods to my GT II, just for fun.  The first is installing a tone hoop using 1/8" copper tubing.  This cost all of $3.

Second was the testing of a BanjoMate Tone Enhancer.  It was forwarded to me by the original tester.  If memory serves they cost $20.

I posted the results under BanjoMate Tone enhancer - another review.  MP3 only as I don't have video capability yet.

Feel free to ask questions if you're interested.

Where did you get the copper tubing? Round tubing or square? What was your process for bending it round? 11 inch hoop? 12 inch? I have old Gibson with a 1/2 inch silver tone hoop. I love it.

Copper tubing was straight off the shelf at the hardware store. Round tubing was easily bent by hand and shaped to fit. I left it open on the ends and the "hoop" slightly larger than the space so it was a snug fit when placed inside. My GT has a groove in the rim where it fit perfectly. I'm not particularly happy with the sound. It creates soo much sustain that it sounds muddy, to my ears and others. See comments on the Sound off post. Think I will buy a brass one from the fellow that advertised here on BHO, a slightly larger diameter, and see how that sounds.

What is GT II? On Gold Tone's web site there is no model by that name or designation.

My apologies Tom: I should have stated off the bat Goodtime II.

This is super, super cool. If you're making recordings or anything like that, it'd be neat to hear the difference.

I'm still going to repost with stock Goodtime II banjo and another with BanjoMate installed.
With all my fooling around I got the setup out of whack. I had to completely disassemble it and start from scratch. Goodtimes are simple so it was no big deal just time consuming. Have to tweak it just a bit more and will most likely post tomorrow. Want to be fair in my assesment of it's effect. After that I will pass it on to someone else to test, as was done for me.

Well, looks like I won't be able to post my final comparison for a while. I was opening an older window, in which the retaining weight had failed, when it slipped and dropped onto 3 fingers of my fretting hand. Now very purple and very sore/sensitive to touch. Not broken but going to take a while to heal. Also peeled back the nails on 2 fingers of my right hand. Doing the one finger typing hop here so gonna go. Later

Turns out the fingers are more flexible than I thought they would be. I did the comparison and posted in "Other Banjo related topics". Not perfect but then, what they hey!

Please get well soon! And take special care with your hand!
Best Wishes,
Tom
