Here is some advice to get through the woods. There are only about three string factories in the entire United States. But there are dozens of brands. The secret truth is that when you buy different brands you are often getting exactly the same string just a different package.

So, my advice is to not worry too much about brand names and just get the diameters you like and the string material you like (steel, bronze, copper).

So, what I do is to get a bunch of singles (0.009, 0.010, 0.011. 0.012. 0.013 . . . and so forth) and then experiment until you find exactly the gauges that you like for a specific banjo. Then, once you have figured that out, buy the gauges, that you discovered you like, in bulk.

If you buy in bulk a single plain string can be as little as 80 cents . . . something like that. Of course you have to lay out a bunch of money to buy in bulk, but it is less money over time.

For banjo, you will most likely want “loop-end.
