yosko tenor bano #4---- valuation???

From atleson on 9/26/2012 1:48:15 PM

hi all,  I'd like some help determining the value of a Yosko #4.  I'm not sure, but this might be the top of the line.  It has a huge 13 and 5/8" pot and, i believe, is rosewood.  Pictures are on my BHO homepage.

It is beautiful, and that has held me back from my initial goal which was to add a 5-string neck to it.  I am reluctant to break up such a lovely instrument, although i'm told that these huge pots are not very useful for tenor players.  Please let me know about this as well.

Hi Jim,

I played a Yosco years ago, with a huge hollow rim as I recall. I agree that most tenor players would not appreciate this type of banjo. They are not bright and are not especially loud. But Yoscos are a wonderful example of the creative experimentaion in the development of the banjo. They are also scarce. I would very much like to have banjo like that because it would be very much suited to the Tin Pan Alley tunes I play. If it were mine, I'd leave it as a tenor, but that's only my opinion.

thanks VT, i'd like to keep it whole too, but only if i could sell it to some willing tenor player for a decent price. Then, maybe, i could find a big Yosko that's of lesser quality and i wouldn't feel so bad about de-constructing it.
