I was pleased to find out yesterday that somebody had started a group for Retrotone owners. I feel as though they are as good a banjo as you could buy for the money (then) and my craftsmanship has been elevated to a whole new level these days, and I know the Retros will represent lasting value.
I am just putting the finishing touches on a custom Bowtie version if anybody would be interested in seeing that one. I have only to complete the finish work on the resonator. There are a couple anomalies to this banjo ... namely a Cox rim and a Recording King resonator which I have done a very rich sunburst finish on. It plays like butter, and aside from being just a tad brighter, still possesses the qualities inherent to the Retrotone series banjos.
Oh yeah ... The inlays are gold mother of pearl, which is a tad different too.
The banjo's sunburst is a bit different from that of a Gibson, and was born of necessity. The mahogany that I used in this neck came from a Virginia shipyard 35 or so years ago, and this particular piece was scorched a bit, which showed below the binding. The finish looks great, and I defy you to tell me where that scorch was. The up side ... is that you simply will not find a drier piece of mahogany to build a neck from. This is exceptional tonewood. Probably some of the finest mahogany I've ever had made available to me.
Thanks for your support.
Wyatt
