Back from SBC!

From Lew H on 3/23/2016 7:13:03 AM

I'm back from SBC now.  I had a great time but the day and a half drive there gets more daunting as time goes on.  I met new pickers, renewed acquaintances with a few of the instructors, and got to be in some fun jams. I brought my dobro to one, my longneck to two others (a bluegrass jam and a singing jam. Two jams kept going after their official ending time, and the one where I had my dobro turned into a blues jam at that point. James McKinney did some great blues breaks on banjo in that jam.

I was in several classes that should expand my old time repertoire. Brad Leftwich grabbed me with his class on Oklahoma and Ozark tunes, where I spent some of my formative years banjoically. And, I especially liked Cathy Barton Para's classes.  She also dealt with songs from these areas, with two of my favorite artists Lilly Mae Ledford and Grandpa Jones).

These were great, but more fun was James McKinney's session on cutting edge techniques in bluegrass.  While the class had the bluegrass label, it was easily applicable to clawhammer picking with its emphasis on tapping, eBow, etc.

Once I returned back home, I was able to catch up on my sleep. I hope everyone else had as great a time as I did!
