where to start

From Vizsladad on 10/29/2015 4:52:27 PM

Good day all,

I am interested in starting with a banjo, I am looking for info on brands, I am looking at an Oscar Schmit 5. and for someone in my area for a mentor. I am in Knox County and am completely new to this.

I do know I want to try Blue Grass style, and any advise you can give would be great, I look forward to hearing from all and getting to know you all.

Thanks
Dave S

Well, I'll give you my opinion. I play a Washburn B-120 and absolutely love it. I even did a review on it... youtube.com/watch?v=dYLEE5sZtes...Anyway, bottom line is that you get what you pay for. Steer away from the "el cheapo" brands like Rogue, Jameson, Pyle, etc. If you are looking for a resonator, try Deering, Washburn, Epiphone, Fender, Morgan Monroe, Recording King, & Oscar Schmit to name a few.
If you get one online, you'll have to get it setup properly, i.e. bridge adjustment, head tension, truss rod check, and most of the local shops I deal with don't really know how to fine tune the banjo. One of the most common problems I have with my students is the lower price instruments cannot be tuned properly, especially the 3rd (G) string. Usually this can be solved with a change of bridge (usually) and strings. Also, most of the above mentioned banjos are equipped with low quality strings and need to be upgraded. If you would like to get a more detailed help/response, email me at ai1b04352@yahoo.com and I'd be glad to help you out with good sources of instruments and the learning material I have my students use.
