Any good spots around ME to buy a decent used Banjo....looking to spend around $100, which isn't a lot...but what I can afford. Just starting to learn :-)

I sold a Harmony longneck on Craig's List a couple of years ago for $125. You might check there. Not to discourage you, but you won't find much that's playable for $100.

I agree with mainejohn...As a banjo teacher and performer, I've seen many low end banjos, and the fuss to get them playable is not worth the hassle. There are some lower priced banjos that are relatively easy to get in shape, and usually only require a bridge change and minor adjustments. Deering, Morgan Monroe, Recording King, Rogue, Oscar Schmidt, Epiphone, and Fender come to mind. Of course it also depends on what style you want to play, clawhammer or bluegrass. I do both, plus some styles that no one hears much of anymore. Bottom line is what I tell all my beginner students...Don't spend $$$$$ then find out you don't like it. Spend a little, then upgrade.

Some of the music stores sell basic beginner banjos for around $150-$200, i think. The one in Augusta does, anyway. Like the others have said, I can't promise excellent playability, but I also think it makes sense to not invest too heavily until you're sure you're committed. But you might find something on craigslist, definitely. Also consider looking online! The classifieds here on banjohangout have a ton of banjos . Shipping usually runs around $25.

Portland. I have had an eye on craigslist, which is not my normal go-to, and surprisingly Amazon may be my best bet. Free shipping with decently priced 5-strings and some even come with a case, picks, and dvd. Also, new.

I am in Presque Isle and have an old one that I would part with for almost nothing. But it is a long drive. I think it would work out for a good beginner banjo. But Portland is a long way, that is why I was wondering. Also you can check ebay.
