Easley/Greenville area

From Fretting Fingers on 11/9/2017 5:00:06 AM

Is there any one in the area that would like to get together and pick some? I have been playing for a while but have never picked with another person or a jam group. After hearing all the horror stories about getting into a jam group not all that interested in getting embarrassed in front of a lot of people though.

Hi Dave,

I totally understand the concerns about jam "horror stories". Still, it's a good idea to get out there and pick with other people. You can find inspiration and make some good friends. At this point the only regular jam I can think of in your area is at the old Oolenoy schoolhouse in Pumpkintown - 5301 Dacusville Hwy, Pickens, SC 29671. I live in Simpsonville, and Oolenoy is just too far away for me to go to. You can Google Oolenoy bluegrass jam and get more info. I think they do it every other week.

As far as comfort with jamming goes, can you pick along with your favorite records? When the banjo break comes up on a song, are you able to play along (even if you're not playing the exact same thing as the picker on the record)? If so, you can play at a jam. That's the best way to practice - play along with the recordings of great musicians.

Hey Flying Eagle,

I have heard of but never gone to the Oolenoy jam. I have looked it up several times and even planed to go but just never got around to it, I guess the embarrassment factor plays in so I thought maybe finding someone to pick with would be a good idea. Thanks for the comment!
