The neck is not designed or reinforced to use steel strings. You will find some that survive steel but more often than not you will see the effects. For sure I would not put anything other than gut or nylgut on my SSS Thoroughbred. David E.

Mine used to have steel strings on it for a very long time. Now it has nylgut, it sounds pretty good with those.
