Drop thumbing question

From MajArcher on 1/15/2012 2:51:56 PM

This question is getting a bit ahead of my capabilities but here goes:  Let's say you're not reading tab or the tab doesn't specifically say to play a note by drop thumbing, is there a general rule of "thumb" of when to do it?

No strict rules at all.

If you are following the melody you might limit your drop thumbs to melody notes.

If you are hitting Rhythmic Drop Thumbs you might limit them to after the 2nd and/or 4th beat of the measure.
Think in terms of overall sound though. Don't mechanically add DTs to every other beat.

Some dances (like Polkas) tend to be in what I call March Time. And while I like to stick with the melody I occasionally will play the first note of the measure with No thumb note (or slur) and hit a back half note (again thumb or slur) on beats 2, 3, and 4.

However it is all pretty loose. I try to never go a couple measures without a DT but if there are other banjos in the jam I might take the absolutely simplest line and do no thumb or slur notes at all for long stretches of melody
