What Songs have you banjofied?

From David Cunningham on 2/19/2011 8:39:26 PM

Anybody here play their banjo on punk/alternative/new wave songs?  I just did a poor version of Jesus Walking on the Water (Violent Femmes).  It seems to be a good one for it once my skills improve.

not exactly punk but i've played sinead o'connor, "the last day of our acquaintance", and "brown eyed girl" by van the man.

I'll have to try Brown Eyed Girl.

I did my version of Brown Eyed Girl. It is not something I would post yet. Needs a good bit of polishing!

Seriously, it's bad, my singing really bad. It's really hard to sing and play at the same time. I think my version of Fascination by Human League is coming along much better.

i'm going to work on "wave of mutilation" by the pixies.

David Cunningham says:

But - I'll try to force myself to post part of brown eyed girl. I tried recording it last night and it was horrible really. As soon as I hit record I become nervous which is really stupid since there's no one listening but me.

ha ha, i'm too afraid to record myself because i screw up all the time.

David Cunningham says:

I love that song. Pixies are great.

David Cunningham says:
2/23/2011 10:04:58 PM

rachel.love says:
2/23/2011 10:23:36 PM

yes, chicken. totally. however, i am working on wave of mutilation and it sounds pretty good. how 'bout i promise to post a recording of it when i get it buttoned up a bit?

David Cunningham says:
2/23/2011 10:37:10 PM

OK. I'm pretty chickenfied myself as far as posting music uploads goes, but I'm going to work on getting some more stuff up.

A while back I did a simplistic clawhammer adaptation of Circle Jerk's Wild in the Streets. Not sure I like it very much though and I haven't done much to improve it as my playing has gotten better.

This week I have toyed around with a couple Nick Cave songs (Curse of Millhaven and Thirsty Dog). Curse of Millhaven practically begs to be countrified or folkified as it is, and I arranged it in clawhammer for vocal accompaniment. Thirsty Dog seems bluesy in scale so that's how I'm playing it -- Dock Boggs / Gus Cannon-ish three-finger old-time picking, along with a bottleneck slide for the "I'm sorry" powerchord part in the chorus. I like how it's coming along so far.

nice... maybe you can post these some time!

Colinski says:

Some day. My banjo sounds like it's underwater when I've recorded it with either my laptop or camera, so I'll need some better equipment before I'll subject y'all to it.

rachel.love says:

maybe you should get out of the pool. :)

David Cunningham says:

Colinski, all you should need is a USB mic as long as the preamp on your laptop sound card is hot enough. I use a cheapo Logitech and Audacity.

Lots of Dead Kennedys, Ramones, DRI tunes, here's an Angry Samoans tune: youtube.com/watch?v=Z4JVbbQS6FI

Most of Nick Cave's Murder ballads stuff should be very banjofiable because it's all adaptations of folk ballads and blues anyway... Dead Kennedys is often country, Ramones is blues... So it shouldn't be tough. the problem is just to avoid sounding cheesy (that's an English expression I think but I guess everyone can understand, it's hard to translate...). My group in France has just allowed me to play banjo on one song we do - it was quite an experience hearing my open-back wired for sound for the first time. Hoping to start playing around with effects at some point. I'll send a link to it once we get a recording at a gig. It'll be in French but...

PS I once saw Tenpole Tudor do Who Killed Bambi on accoustic guitar at a pub in London, and that was effective, so why not on banjer? There was also Pete Shelley doing his Buzzcocks stuff on accoustic - I'm sure "Something goes wrong again" would sound great on banjo...
And "Stagger Lee" is great fun on banjo - I found clawhammer tabs in Patrick Costello's "Outlaws and Scallywags" book, which is available on the net and is a great banjo book for punks... (there's also Jessie James in there, of course, for Pogues fans...)
Love anarchy and truss rods

I'm a relative newcomer to punk, as my experience is mostly Green Day and Flogging Molly (I don't know if they are technically punk, but they sound like it to me right now). I do like bands that have an edge though, so I plan to look up the groups listed in your posts.

So I have played "Wake Me Up When September Ends" on the banjo (really just the guitar part, including the solo). Not terribly difficult, but sounds cool as far as I'm concerned.

Also working on "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zeppelin, who use banjo on "Gallows Pole" and should have on "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" and I'm working on that a little too) and "New Born" by Muse. Fun! And I love the Angry Samoans cover linked above - very cool!
