Prucha Tenor

From Flatat on 9/6/2015 3:30:44 PM

Any Prucha Tenor owners in this forum?

I have one of the "basic" tenors (can't see the model on Prucha website), and very happy with it

However, I'd  love to know any views or experiences with the Fall in Love Tenor or any thoughts on an arch top Prucha tenor?

While i haven't played an archtop Prucha tenor, I have played a couple of his 5-string archtops. They are archtops, for sure, but have more depth and tonal complexity than any pre-war Gibson I've ever played, including one I owned for over 10 years.

There was one that was a particular standout, a banjo that is now at least 15 years old. Greg Boyd originally got it in, planned to keep it because it sounded so good, but sold it. 5 years later, it came up for sale, and he re-bought it for more than he sold it for, and kept it as his own for at least another 5 years or more; although I constantly tried to get him to sell it to me, he refused.

In a moment of a money crunch, he finally let it go to another- a fast sale, but one he still regrets. Once more, he made more money on it than when if first sold new. Once more, I cussed him for not giving me first shot at it.

Greg and I are old, good friends. I hope for both our sakes that one never goes back to Montana again, as a friend is more dear to me than any banjo, but I have lusted after very, very few good banjos in my lifetime, and that archtop is still on top of my short list. I've always liked the tone of a good archtop that is well set up, and that one is now the standard any archtop I play must measure to.

Since archtops always seem to favor the tenor banjo especially, I'm sure you would be very happy with one. That banjo was a Fall In Love, with an amber maple neck, with mixed gold parts. it was as beautiful to see as it was to hear.

And I'm not a particular fan of the Fall In Love. I like the looks of the Diamond Point better. Greg likes the Bat model the best for looks. We were both in love with that Fall in Love…
regards,
Stanger
