Didn't originally intend to adopt another banjo at Wintergrass, but a Prucha Fall In Love sang sweetly with a lyrical voice, and for the past 3 weeks I've been picking on it every minute I can spare. (BTW: Many thanks to Greg Boyd, for bringing out such tempting inventory and making it happen.)

I have been floored by the workmanship. My banjo teacher today pointed out the exterior of the rim is curved outwards, where it joins the curve of the flange. Is this typical pot construction for Pruchas? I'm wondering if this helps sweeten the sound, sort of the way the massif resonators function (which in turn look like they were inspired by the Gibson top tension resonator design)?

	stanger says: 3/21/2014 7:36:57 AM Hi, Janice… Everyone who owns a Prucha wonders about the same thing, including me. I was with Greg when he saw a Prucha for the first time, back in 1996, and I actually played that banjo before he did. That Prucha was impressive, but the guy has gotten better since then. He hasn't ever made no single big change, but comparing one that's 20 years old next to a new one reveals many small refinements. His banjos are truly the sum of everything, not just one thing. Part is the wood, part is the quality of all the metals, and part is the craftsmanship. While his original designs may look like a Mastertone, when measured, there are very many subtle differences. One is the placement of the flange; it's mounted lower on the rim than a Mastertone, which increases the air volume inside. There are many, many others. It seems to me that Prucha mixed some of the earlier 2-piece flange elements of the early Mastertones with elements from the later 1-piece flange models, then added refinements of his own. regards, stanger

And after having it for nearly two years now I'm still blown away by the richness of its tone. And I get comments all the time on how well it sounds.

Last year, I had the opportunity to compare an excellent pre-war RB75, a brand new Huber, and a new Prucha Fall in Love side by side. All were great banjos, but I still liked the Prucha tone the best. While the Mastertone design is the de facto standard, Pruchas re-define it and take it to a new level.
