Hello group,

Does anyone play a Steve Dilling standard model? I really like the Spirit Headstock compared to the older Prucha's and this one seems to be more like a bluegrass machine and a bit less progressive?

	stanger says: 3/23/2023 9:31:24 AM Hi, Tim... A good friend owns one. She likes it, but I think her older Prucha Top Tension is still her favorite. You're correct; the Dilling was designed to have an older, more traditional appearance, but without copying another banjo. As far as the Dilling's tone goes, it's completely Prucha. Versatility is the best description of their tone. If you want the trad old-style bluegrass sound, it's there, but so is more modern tonality. They can be set up to match your personal tastes quite easily. I do like the Spirit peghead a lot, but I also like his older one too. My favorite inlay pattern is still the Diamond Point, so if I ever wanted a Spirit, I would talk to Jarda about using it. He's very good to talk with, and will make anyone a banjo with custom touches. I own 2 Diamond Points- the older one is his standard model w/ his patina parts. Got it in 2006. I loved it, and eventually wanted a matching open back. He made one for me in 2012 that isn't an exact match, but it's exactly what I ordered. ( I decided to use cherry instead of mahogany for the neck, and I ordered it with a Gibson-style bracket tube instead of shoes.) I'm as happy with this second banjo as I was the first. The 2 feel identical, so switching from one to the other has no adjustment problems at all. regards, stanger

I was surprised at such possibility. At the time I confused the tonal range for being overly progressive and sold it. Now, of course being a banjo player...regret it. Interestingly my current axe, a 1988 Stelling is remarkably versatile with a slightly lower head tension. I guess most quality instruments can be adjusted well but Prucha has a special quality I feel. Best wishes, Tim
	stanger says: 4/16/2024 8:34:33 AM Geoff Stelling is one of Prucha's main influences. He stayed with Mr. Stelling on one of his first trips to the USA, and they became good friends.
