All you perfectionists looking for the perfect polymer strings for a banjo...

I have old sets of nylon strings taken off my classical guitar (it is often the wound strings which have gone...). On one of my fretless banjos I use the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th of an old set of guitar strings, with another old 1st for the thumb string. It seems to work...

Any comments? Or is this such a disgusting slovenly low-class comment that you will ignore it?

I am actually interested in the subject, and being a bit "tongue-in-cheek" :-)

David Moore says: 7/16/2016 7:06:22 AM I have poly strings on one of my Doc's banjos that came with it when I bought it. I was told they were guitar strings but not exactly which ones. I have tried Nylgut and other strings in the past and have not been as pleased as I am with these as these strings are heavier and do not flex as much with harder picking. The wound string is starting to get fret marks and I am avoiding replacing any of them as I like the ones on it now. I know I will in the future have to try and while I have even tried nylon harp strings as well as fishing line on a mountain fretless nothing is as good as these. So in time, off to the guitar shop and start experimenting with some classical guitar strings. Certainly not a low-class discussion. Grin
	Bufo Bill says: 7/16/2016 1:40:10 PM Re-purposing and recycling are never low-class or slovenly ideas, particularly with Polymer items, that are increasingly of worry environmentally, and from experience guitar strings feel good on some banjos. Please let us not debase this discussion with talk of banjos and the music they make being of environmental worry ;) All the best from Bill.
	john bange says: 8/13/2016 9:21:15 AM I am past 2 years with a set of all-nylon strings. because of the scale length of my banjo(Vega/Deering little wonder long neck) I use harp strings. I make up sets from spools of various weights, I do not use a wound string. They sound as bright and loud now as when I first put them on.
	john bange says: 8/13/2016 9:29:11 AM I would use the nylon strings off my Martin if they were long enough,,,but then, I only change the wound strings on that instrument and leave the nylon DAddario's EJ-46's on for 2 or 3 changes, at least. To my ear, only the wound strings degrade. Daily practice and a gig a week...not bad string life, me thinks
