thought I would see what kind of comments I get from this...my 2 non tone ring banjos have nylon strings. In order to get the tone and volume I want out of them, I keep the head tension very high. I even bought a drum head tension gauge to keep it even.
My Deering built Vega banjos are vary well made and the parts that come with them are all top notch but, I have to change out the tension hooks and nuts to get the tension I want. It is possible to break an original Deering hook. I get hooks and nuts from Elderly or Rickard banjo because they are stronger and I like the closed end nuts better.
without this high tension, I run into the same problem mentioned in the nylgut setup link Bill added a couple of days ago
