Density/material of Chris Sands strings

From Mollie Smith on 7/4/2012 12:19:56 PM

Hi,

I don't like either Nylgut or Sands strings, so I'm doing some string calculations to determine my own string gauges based on  D'Addario strings that sound great on my Fairbanks cello banjo and my minstrel banjo.  Does anyone know the density of the material in Chris Sands' strings?  Or at least the material he uses?  I'm not sure he's using plain nylon, because his strings seem very different than other nylon strings I have used.

Thanks,

Mollie

There is a thread on Nylon strings currently under discussion in the old time playing advice forum which may help with the technical work a little or you may find someone with the info to help you out. Would you be willing to post your calculations on this page for others to look over, I would be very interested in the science of this myself. I am sorry I can't be any more help to you than this, my knowledge doesn't stretch that far.
Great to know you, all the best from Bill.

Hi Bill,
Yes, I'll be happy to post my calculations. Do you want me to find the forum and post them there? Or here on my page? D'Addario provides a document that I found very helpful for calculating string gauges (for their strings). I set up an Excel spreadsheet to do the calculations for me.
Thanks,
Mollie

If I recall correctly, you can determine density: weigh a measured length of string then divide the weight by the length in inches. That should give you what you need for the string tension formula.

Hi Mollie, posting them here would be great. If you are feeling computer competent (unlike me!) could you post a link to the D'Addario info, please? Don't worry if you can't get it to work on the page.
Many thanks from Bill.

Bufo Bill; I believe this is the page referred: daddario.com/upload/tension_ch...13934.pdf

This is another helpful page: liutaiomottola.com/formulae/tension.htm

Many thanks for the links. Very useful for the group as well I hope!
All the best from Bill.

Yes, mbanza linked the same document I've been using.
