just joined this group in hopes of learning something about nylgut strings. i am building a fretless and a semi fretless and am thinking about trying nylgut strings, but i know absolutely nothing about them. any input would be helpful.

	C Nyal de Kaye says: 3/4/2012 1:14:56 PM Welcome to the Group Steve. I am no expert in anything really but I have been using nylon strings on a fretless for many years. About six months ago I moved to Nylgut. In my view they are much better. They are more solid, that is give more resistance to the stroke, and to me that feels a lot better. To my ear they sound a lot better as well. I am using the medium strings. Some have reported easy breakage with the comment that you need to smooth out the bridge and nut before installing them. I did that and have had no trouble with breakage. Give them a go mate,
rot-n-dobe says: 3/4/2012 2:16:55 PM i have seen these strings on ebay. are the "medium classic" the ones i should get? where is a good place to get them? i have heard Elderly Instruments sells them but don't know for sure. btw, i am in wisconsin, usa.
	C Nyal de Kaye says: 3/4/2012 3:19:48 PM The strings that I am using are Aquila Classic banjo Medium. I am in Australia so I can't help you with a supplier. Elderly usually has everything so I would try them.

I got the classic medium, all nylgut, none wound, as I'm tuning a very small jo in open G. It's working but taking a longer time to settle in than with other instruments I've used them on.

About how long should I expect these to last? On my Bluegrass banjo I change them once a month but the Nylguts are too expensive and time consuming to change and stretch out.
	Frailblazer says: 4/16/2012 6:54:49 PM I play about the sqme amount as you and find that my Nylgut strings last for about a year. They tend to develop unwanted overtones at about the 1 year mark.
