Fluorocarbon strings questions

From csbdr on 12/12/2011 9:49:39 AM

Hey all!  I'm having my first experience with synthetic strings. I picked up a Supertone banjo restored, with a skin head, no-knot, untopped maple bridge(what is it, "spillway style", I think. Flat bottom with a row of holes in it. )  and it has fluorocarbon strings, except lowest is steel. So I was wondering what advantages or disadvantages there are to this material, over other materials?

I also had to loosen all the strings to get some oil on the fretboard, which was really dry. On tightening them up it is taking FOREVER for this thing to get holding a tune. Is this typical? I notice each time I tune/play/tune it gets a little better, but it still has a long way to go. I did see the thread on stretching new strings, but these were just loosened. I'm guessing you have to "start over" to a certain degree if you dramatically loosen the strings?

nylon string stretching will begin to slow in about 2 weeks but they will never stop completly. you will always have to tune when you pick it up. when first installed, they are virtually unplayable but are much better overnight. I assume you mean the wound 4th string when you say lowest string is steel. It should be brass wound over silk. this string will be the one that you have to replace more than the others. you can get singles from Bernunzio in New York and I would advise you to get a bunch. the nylon strings will last for a long time.
you can get a lot of string wound around the pegs after a time and this can be a problem. just loosen the strings and rewind, tightening and clipping the ends. It sound like a lot of work but it is not and your Supertone will last forever
