new kid on the block

From granville on 9/25/2011 12:44:11 PM

Well not quite a kid but 61 years old. I am new regards the hang out. Just joined last week and finding it very interesting.

I always wanted to play the banjo since I was a kid but to be honest musical instrument learning is very hard for me, Over the years i bought them and left them in the box after a couple of go's. But I am getting hooked on this banjo I bought.

I am a engineer to trade but I took up wood turning 20 years ago. My Dad was a joiner in the ship yards in Durham nr Newcastle on Tyne. He was a craftsmen with wood so I guess I learnt a bit. He refused to let me take up the trade because he said it wasn't the best for me.

Any way. with me I, cant get anything that I don't want to take to bits or make one the same.

I am now confined to a wheel chair and my mind goes 10 to the dozen in the middle of the night , I must have made at least 100 banjos by now. but I have still to get down in my workshop and start. I think it might be when the spring comes. I am in the Scottish highlands.

the trouble is I talk too much, but I will say the table idea  good, I got new one and I was thinking exactly the same. with the old one.

Ps I am jealous of American's because they have got trees and wood I have never heard of

Welcome to the Hangout and especially to this group. As for the kid part, we are all kids, especially those of us who like to make their own banjos.
As for woods here. I currently have a solid mahogany table top that will become a banjo one day. I found it in an as-is yard, attached to an oak base. a frankentable to be sure. Can't work on it for a while as we are currently fixing up the garage, putting in storage shelves and repairing the roof. Any project on a building that is as old as we are is always more work than anticipated, especially when the temperature gets up to 105.
I want this project finished NOW! Tomorrow we are getting up and out there at sunup as I have to get on the roof and screw the darn corrugated panels down before the metal gets too hot. Since I weigh half as much as hubby, i get the honors of roof tops. When I turn 70 I am retiring from crawling up on the roof, better be done by February.
